A Japanese photographer died Saturday in a fall from the top of a seven-story Katmandu hotel while trying to take pictures, a Japanese Embassy official said Monday. The man was identified as Akira Matsui, 54, from Tokyo.
Matsui fell about 25 meters from the roof of the hotel, where he had been staying. The building is in Katmadu's Thamel area, which is popular with tourists. He had set up his camera and climbed over a protective railing in his final moments.
The 55-room hotel boasts a rooftop garden with unobstructed views of a major part of Katmandu, the surrounding hills and the majestic Himalayan mountains. Matsui, a frequent visitor to Nepal, published a book of his photos of the mountainous Mustang district of northwestern Nepal and had returned from a trip to the district before the fatal fall.
